Description of The Place Resort

Nestled in 15 acres of tropical forest alongside picturesque fishing village of Tokeh, The Place overlooks the majestic Atlantic Ocean & the unspoiled white sandy beach which is among the most beautiful beaches in the country & West Africa.

 We offer an outdoor pool, outdoor gym equipments lined up on the beach and an outdoor restaurant. We also offer Free Wi-Fi access in all the chalets and also outdoor 

The chalet accommodation will provide you with a seating area and you can enjoy a sea view from all the rooms. Private bathrooms also come with a shower.

At The Place Resort you will find a 24-hour front desk, a garden and a terrace. Other facilities offered at the property include a tour desk. The property offers free private parking on site.

Location

The Place at Tokeh Beach is 18 miles south of central Freetown, situated next to the fishing village of Tokeh. This part of Sierra Leone is known as the Western Area peninsula. The Western Area's jewel is its collection of beautiful sandy beaches, stretching from Lumley Beach in Freetown, to Mama Beach, towards the southern point of the peninsula. Tokeh is about half-way down this coast on a pretty white sand beach.  It's westerly outlook means that the sun sets over the sea every evening. 

Getting to Tokeh

From abroad. Air France, SN Brussels, Kenya Airways and Royal Air Maroc provide the main international services to Sierra Leone.  If you are arriving by air, we can arrange a pick up from Lungi International Airport in one of our vehicles for an extra charge.

From Freetown, there are good roads all the way. We strongly recommend that you use the new Regent Grafton Road to Jui for ease of traffic. From Jui, you can now make your way to Waterloo which because of the good road will approximately last you 10 to 15 minutes. From Waterloo, you can now use the Tombo park axis and make your way to Tombo and then to the other peninsular villages like Kent, York, Kerry Town etc. and eventually to Tokeh which should last you about 30 to 45 minutes. Using the new Regent Grafton to Jui highway, the journey should last between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes. The site of the Mudslide when the Sugar Loaf Mountains at Regent sliced leading to the death of over 1,000 people in August 2017 is now gathering huge tourist attraction and can be visibly seen if you use this route

If you choose, the Goodrich Street, Abacha Street and Kissy Road axis from central Freetown which we do not recommend primarily because of the high traffic within town, you will spend between 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to get to Jui. From Jui you will then spend another 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to Tokeh

If you are using commercial transportation and you decide to use the centre of Freetown route, you can take commercial transportation using the mini buses locally known as Poda-Poda from either Kissy Road, Fourah Bay Road or the Magazine Cut area straight to Waterloo Tombo Park and from there you can pick up Taxis that will take you direct to Tokeh Village

If you decide to use the New Regent Grafton to Jui Route via commercial transportation, you can take a Taxis or Poda-Poda from a place called  Wilberforce in Freetown, then to Jui and from there you can pick up another Poda-Poda or Taxi to Waterloo Tombo Park and from there you take a taxi straight to Tokeh

An entry visa is needed for most passport holders entering Sierra Leone. In some cases, we can arrange these for visitors.  For more information, contact the nearest Sierra Leone embassy, consulate or high commission in your country.

You will need a Yellow Fever certificate to enter the country, and it is advised you visit your local GP to get anti-malarial medication and any necessary inoculations before you come.

Water Supply & Sanitation

The Place at Tokeh Beach works closely with the local community to provide access to clean drinking water. Every year Tokeh village would suffer during the peak of the dry season, as the water supply would decrease due to high temperatures and increased use. With the support of The Place at Tokeh Beach Water & Sanitation team plus the development of the nearby dam, there is now a direct pipeline to outlets across the village, which provides treated, safe drinking water at all stand-pipes.

Education

The Place at Tokeh Beach recognises the importance of education and made sure this was a key part of developing a strong relationship with the local community. During construction of the resort in 2013, The Place helped build Tokeh Secondary School located just off the main peninsular high way. Over the years we have continued to provide equipment such as tables, chairs, workbooks and stationary to help improve the standard of teaching. In collaboration with the village chief and school staff, The Place at Tokeh Beach is planning on offering enough books to create a library for all nearby residents.

Employment

The majority of our staff at The Place at Tokeh Beach are recruited from Tokeh village as we feel it is essential in enhancing our connection to the community. The Place at Tokeh Beach arranges regular training sessions for all of our staff, helping them to learn new skills and reach their potential. We have also recently started an internship scheme, whereby graduates from nearing towns are able to take part in a short-term placement to learn about different roles within the hotel industry. The Place at Tokeh Beach encourages our staff to express their ideas and appreciate their input as to how we can be the best resort in Sierra Leone.

About Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s known for the white-sand beaches lining the Freetown Peninsula. The capital city, Freetown, commemorates the nation’s slave-trade history with the Cotton Tree landmark and King’s Yard Gate. Both were known as places of refuge for returned slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby Bunce Island was a key departure point during the slave trade

Sierra Leone has seen a heartening recovery since emerging from a decade civil war which began in 1991 and ended in 2002 and is making a determined push towards Eco-Tourism. However, it recently suffered from Mudslide and floods in August of 2017 which led to the death of 1,000 people. Despite this, it inspires many feelings in those who visit as they wonder at her natural beauty and extraordinary wildlife, heartache for her past suffering, and joy in her enduring spirit and sense of fun.

Take a trip to Sierra Leone’s infamous diamond mines and rainforest-covered mountains; go in search of the elusive pygmy hippo; or simply relax on the country’s beaches and islands.
